Weird Book

I spent 2 days reading this 630 page book. I hardly slept doing it, because everyone knows that kids bug you when you try to read in the day. I tried to get in what I could when they played quietly, but mostly it was one interruption after another so I did most of the reading at night. Which means there wasn't a lot of sleeping. This book was just... mostly, not good. The idea actually could have been really suspenseful and science-fictiony (not a real word) intriguing. But it wasn't. I have not been interested to read her other best selling novels, the Twilight books and now I know that I REALLY don't want to read them. Her writing is monotonous and everything is the same. The character is constantly hiding in the rocks, thinking someone is going to kill her or "cringing" at everything. The guy she loves is a jerk who is constantly beating her up, but she is weirdly attracted to him and says he is "beautiful" about 30 times. The girl in her head- the body that she possess- is cruel and violent and inconsistent. One minute she wants to kill everything and hates the alien who took control of her body and the next she wants to save it. Blah, blah... I had to know what happened.

Really in the end they try to save the parasitic alien when they really should have just stuck with the plan of letting it die. Not the 'of course' happy ending, but something to really get it to stick in your mind. There were parts with the cave living that just DRAGGED forever on and the suspense was never more than a few minutes long. It could have been a better story if someone else had written it. Really, she is popular?? I have read so many better authors in my years of reading and she did not prove to be one of them with this book.

I'm glad you posted about this book. I haven't read it yet, but I have been skeptical. I read her Twilight books and while I enjoyed them, I agree, she can be a monotonous author. They were more of an extreme escape book for me. I don't know if I will read the Host, I guess if it comes my way I might. But I probably won't be salivating over it. And I agree with you, I have read from infinitly better authors!

That is funny. You make me want to read it now, haha. I read the first Twilight book and I would say, give it a try if you're bored. I thought it a bit on the highschooly (yes, not a word either) side, ya know? But it was intriguing so someday I will read the others.

I have never read any of her books. I have the first one of the Twilight series, but still haven't started. Thanks for the review!

I'm surprised you didn't like "The Host." I actually really enjoyed it and thoroughly enjoyed the "Twilight" series. I guess it's all just what you go in expecting. The Twilight series was very young and was, at times, monotonous as you mentioned. I saw it more as 'brain candy' than anything else. Same thing with "The Host"; pure brain candy. But, yes, many, many more wonderfuller (not a word either) authors out there. But, to me, she is still fun and easy to read.

OK, total Stephenie Meyer fan here, I haven't read the Host yet, but I loved the Twilight series. It's totally interesting. A little juvenile at times, but it is about a 17 yr old. She does tend to repeat her adoration a little much for the love interest in the story, but I remember I was the same way when I was a lovesick teen! I am curious to read this book now! LOL!
